The Portland Trailblazers

Today I went to my first professional basketball game ever. The Portland Trailblazers versus the Los Angeles Clippers. We lost 86 to 99, but whatever. Sporting events rock. The first photograph isn't photo shopped. They really swung a car around the stadium throwing out free gym passes. In the second shot, don't worry. He went on to make the basket.

I hope my paycheck is a billion dollars

Besides camping, Spring Break has been a blur of working. Thank god for parks and the quick fixes that they are.

Oregon Camping: Wet but Fun

Mary pretty much got it all. Let me elaborate on what she meant by my name getting us "the best camping spot." I went up to the window to pay the park ranger for our night at the campgrounds we were staying at. He asked for my last name and I said Hess. He thought this was fantastic because his best friend (and ex-girlfriend, but don't worry, its all good) was a Hess. Then he went on about Austria and Germany and the origination of the name and so on and so forth. He then asked my first name and I said, you know, Marie. Oh, that was my grandmother's name, he said! So he gave us a wink and what he said was the most desirable spot in the whole campground.

Yeaah, its good to be me.

Marie, Gail, Chris and I went camping yesterday.
Because of Marie's names, "Ranger Dan" gave us an awesome, or "the best", camping spot.
It was right next to the ocean.

It was raining off and on, windy and cold but we were happy when the sun came out.
But I had such a good time I have to upload 3 photos.

Another photo to come for today.

The walk from work

OMSI has been so busy lately that the staff has had to park a couple blocks away and get shuttled to work. The weather was really nice after I got off so I skipped the shuttle and walked down to the parking lot. This sort of hippie looking van was parked right outside with its radio on and this sweet looking dog tied to the door.

Oh, laundry.
We're going camping tomorrow and the next day.
So there will be photo delays.

Everyone should listen to The Young Immortals

Peace Rally 07'

PORTLAND - Thousands of anti-war protesters marched through downtown streets Sunday, part of a national day of protest against U.S. involvement in Iraq.

Sunday is the fourth anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. During that time, according to public opinion polls, American citizens' sentiment has turned against the war.

That anti-war sentiment has always been strong in Portland, where sizeable anti-war rallies date back to the days leading up to the U.S. invasion.

Though the march was largely peaceful, there were sporadic outbreaks of trouble. At about 4:30 pm, protesters clashed with police near the downtown Nordstrom store, at SW Park and Yamhill. Several protesters taunted and threatened police, some of whom responded with pepper spray. More officers rushed to the scene to quell the outbreak.

The marching started about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, and people were still joining it an hour later. Organizers worked with police and Portland city planners in an effort to avoid violent clashes. The march's leaders appointed at least 40 people to serve as self-enforcing "peacekeepers". They wore yellow shirts and worked with police, many of whom rode bicycles. Because officers on horseback have often inflamed protesters in past marches, the horseback officers tried to stay back a block or two from the march route, held in reserve to be used only as needed. Somewhat closer to the marching route, other officers rode bicycles - a symbol seen as less offensive by some of the more militant protesters. But both horseback and bicycle-riding officers quickly moved into the skirmish scenes when marchers got into shoving matches with police.

There were "Peace Camp" activities in the south park blocks from before the start of the march until after its conclusion. They included a series of anti-war speakers. Among them was Raed Jerrar, an Iraqi who lives in the United States. He called the United States an "occupying force" that should get out of his native country.

Estimates of the number of marchers varied widely, with most guessing the crowd at up to 10,000 people.

Raise High the Roof Beam

Portland dressed itself in sunshine today, so my book and I took time to reveal in it down at the park. Everyone (and literally their dogs too) were there. We had the obligatory guitar player, the kids playing Frisbee, walkers, runners and other miscellaneous city dwellers meandering about. I felt as if we had all been hibernating through the winter and today was the first sign to awaken from our comas. Clearly, it takes some longer to wake up.

This is not mine. This wine belongs to my LEGAL 21 year old roommate. Yup. This is what SHE had for dinner.

I've got the art school blues.

I spent forty billion hours today trying to get the hell out of art school. They apparently do not want me and my money to transfer to another school. I finally got to leave class at 10pm & went for a run to work off my frustration. It was nice and so was this random pay phone in the middle of my neighborhood. I wonder if our children's children will even know what one of these did one day. (Let superheros change into their outfits, of course!)

I thought about money today.
I also finished Season 2 of Grey's Anatomy.

Only you can prevent apartment fires!

My picture comes with words of advice today folks. Do not ever leave a candle unattended for even just a quick run to the video store! Don't even do it if your roommate is in the apartment with her door open!

(And absolutely never buy candles in jars made apparently of plastic.)

The honest Vendor.

We were wandering the streets when we came upon this man selling his hemp jewelry. He was genuine and happy to be selling his wares so we bought two necklaces and gave him a donut.

Today, I hung out with Pat, Jared, and Marie all day.
We went to VooDoo Donut
